DYGEL INFUSION
Generic Name: Metronidazole
Strength: Metronidazole 500 mg/100 mL
Dosage Form: Intravenous (IV) Infusion
Pharmacological Classification: Nitroimidazole Antibacterial and Antiprotozoal Agent
Family: Antimicrobial Agents
Product Description: DYGEL INFUSION is a sterile intravenous formulation containing metronidazole 500 mg in 100 mL. It is used for the treatment of susceptible anaerobic bacterial infections and certain protozoal infections when intravenous therapy is clinically indicated. It provides systemic antimicrobial activity in hospitalized patients and other appropriate clinical settings.
Indications: DYGEL INFUSION is indicated for selected serious infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria, including certain intra-abdominal, pelvic, gynecological, and other anaerobic infections. It may also be used for specific protozoal infections when appropriate. Depending on the infection, it may be prescribed alongside other antibiotics to provide broader antimicrobial coverage. Use should follow approved indications and local clinical guidelines.
Clinical Benefits: Provides systemic activity against susceptible anaerobic microorganisms, supports the treatment of appropriate infections, and offers an intravenous route when oral administration is unsuitable or intravenous treatment is required.
Mechanism of Action: Metronidazole enters susceptible microorganisms and is converted into reactive compounds that damage DNA and inhibit nucleic acid synthesis, resulting in antimicrobial activity against susceptible anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa.
Dosage and Administration: Each 100 mL contains metronidazole 500 mg. The dose, infusion duration, frequency, and treatment length depend on the type and severity of infection, patient age, clinical condition, and organ function. Administer by intravenous infusion under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional. Do not administer as an unsupervised injection or use a different route unless specifically authorized by the product labeling.
Usual Adult Dosage: For many serious anaerobic infections, a commonly used adult regimen is 500 mg intravenously every 8 hours. The appropriate regimen varies by indication and patient factors and must be determined by the treating clinician. Pediatric doses are calculated according to body weight and the specific infection.
Clinical Advantages: Provides reliable systemic delivery when oral therapy is not appropriate, reaches clinically relevant tissues, and offers targeted activity against susceptible anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa.
Possible Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, headache, metallic taste, and infusion-site irritation may occur. Less commonly, allergic reactions, liver-related adverse effects, or neurological effects such as numbness, tingling, or seizures may occur, particularly with prolonged treatment or high cumulative exposure.
Contraindications: Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives. Review the approved product information for additional contraindications and restrictions.
Warnings and Precautions: Use cautiously in patients with significant liver disease, neurological disorders, or a history of blood disorders. Monitor patients receiving prolonged therapy when clinically appropriate. Seek immediate medical attention for severe allergic reactions, seizures, or new numbness or tingling.
Drug Interactions: Metronidazole may interact with warfarin and other coumarin anticoagulants, lithium, disulfiram, and certain medicines that affect hepatic metabolism. Alcohol should be avoided during treatment and for the period specified in the product information after the final dose. Review all current medicines before administration.
Use During Pregnancy: Use only when clinically indicated and under medical supervision. The decision depends on the infection, pregnancy stage, and applicable clinical guidance.
Use During Breastfeeding: Metronidazole passes into breast milk. The need for treatment and any interruption of breastfeeding depend on the dose, regimen, and clinical circumstances; consult a healthcare professional.
Use in Children: Pediatric treatment requires weight-based dosing and professional supervision.
Storage: Store according to the manufacturer's instructions. Protect the infusion from inappropriate storage conditions and inspect the solution for discoloration, particles, or container damage before use. Do not use if the product is compromised.
Important Information: DYGEL INFUSION is a prescription antimicrobial medicine. Use only for appropriate, diagnosed infections and according to the prescriber's instructions. Metronidazole does not provide adequate coverage for all aerobic bacterial infections, so additional antimicrobial therapy may be required depending on the diagnosis.
