TOSAF 2 GM INJECTION
Composition: Cefoperazone and Sulbactam for Injection,
Dosage Form: Powder for Solution for Injection
Family: Third-Generation Cephalosporin Antibiotic Combination
Product Description:
TOSAF 2 gm is a combination antibiotic containing cefoperazone and sulbactam. Cefoperazone inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis, while sulbactam inhibits susceptible beta-lactamase enzymes, helping protect cefoperazone from degradation by these enzymes. This combination provides broad antibacterial activity against susceptible organisms and is intended for the treatment of appropriate bacterial infections.
Indications:
TOSAF 2 gm may be indicated for susceptible bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, skin and soft-tissue infections, pelvic infections and septicemia, depending on the causative organism and local susceptibility patterns.
Clinical Benefits:
The combination of cefoperazone and sulbactam enhances antibacterial coverage against certain beta-lactamase-producing bacteria. It supports effective treatment of susceptible infections when selected according to clinical assessment, microbiological findings and antimicrobial susceptibility results.
Key Benefits:
- Combines a cephalosporin antibiotic with a beta-lactamase inhibitor.
- Provides activity against a range of susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
- May improve coverage against certain beta-lactamase-producing organisms.
- Suitable for IM or IV administration by trained healthcare professionals.
- Supplied with sterile diluent for preparation before administration.
Dosage and Administration:
The dose, dosing interval and duration depend on the severity and site of infection, causative organism, patient age, liver and kidney function, and the individual strengths of cefoperazone and sulbactam. Reconstitute and administer according to the approved product leaflet. Use only under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known serious hypersensitivity to cefoperazone, sulbactam or other cephalosporin antibiotics. Assess possible beta-lactam allergy before administration.
Precautions:
Use cautiously in patients with hepatic or renal impairment, bleeding disorders or a history of severe antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Cefoperazone may increase bleeding risk in susceptible patients. Avoid alcohol during treatment and for the period specified in the product leaflet because cefoperazone can cause an alcohol-related reaction.
Possible Side Effects:
Possible adverse effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rash, injection-site reactions and changes in liver enzymes or blood counts. Severe allergic reactions and antibiotic-associated colitis may occur rarely.
Drug Interactions:
Use caution with anticoagulants and other medicines that increase bleeding risk. Alcohol may cause an adverse reaction with cefoperazone. Inform the treating healthcare professional about all medicines being used.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only when considered necessary by a healthcare professional after assessing the potential benefits and risks.
Storage:
Store according to the manufacturer's approved product instructions. Use the reconstituted solution within the time and conditions specified in the package insert.
